firecat: hello kitty surrounded by irritation lines (cranky hello kitty)

I get the impression I'm the only person who is a little annoyed by the fuss over Rachel Bloom's video "Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury" (NSFW) (which was recently nominated for a Hugo).

in an interview in Wired, Rachel Bloom says: "The No. 1 thing I am earnestly attracted to is intelligence."

Well, god/dess(es) know I feel the same way! And I've committed plenty of fiction about it.

And there are many messages in the video that I approve of: Women making sexual choices. Women making sexual choices based on things other than what the sociobiologists think they make sexual choices based on. Women publicly celebrating their sexuality. Public celebration of fandom, reading, genre writing, and intelligence.

But the video is full of conventional sex cliches, and I think it also sends the message "Some women are attracted to intelligent men, and what women have to offer said men are boobies and blow jobs." And that message feels limiting.

Thank you. As an evil, sex-hating, humorless fem'nist (clearly), I feel the same way. Seriously, they might as well have said "The only way women can fit into the sci-fi community is if they spread their legs." The fact that a woman wrote it doesn't really change anything. Internalized oppressor, anyone?

I hadn't thought about it in that way. Sigh. And considering some of the issues that the SF community has had around the way women are treated... Double sigh.

Argh, also the fact that it's a song for RAY BRADBURY of all people. So, given the gender politics of his novels, the message is basically "fuck me, call me 'girl' and remind me that my only place is to service men, Ray Bradbury."

I think I agree with your nitpicks! Unfortunately, that song is now stuck in my head. (I wasn't aware of the song before this post.)

I guess "fuck me, Ursula Le Guin" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Ahaha, if I were to make it, it would probably be '[insert awesome writer here], I am monogamous and anyway I'm asexual, but can we hold hands for a bit while we talk about a wide range of awesome things?'

I wasn't as annoyed as you were, but neither did I like the song all that much. She's deliberately going over top in her hyperbole, but it's more than is really necessary to get the point across. it comes off as bad lyrics with a catchy tune.

For the erotellectual vibe, I much prefer Moxy Fruvous, My baby Loves a Bunch of Authors

If it helps to just not feel like everybody loves something but you, I'm not a fan of the song or video myself either, although I admit that my analysis wasn't as deep as yours: I just really dislike them aesthetically, and only made it about five or ten seconds in before I closed the window. (I find that for me, when all I hear about a thing are positive things, it starts to get to me that I'm apparently the only person who doesn't like it, then I often find out later that lots of people I know didn't like it, but just didn't say anything to that effect.)

I'm not convinced the video is "harmless fun". And I was certainly surprised it's up for a Hugo, seriously?

I felt that way, too, but not as articulately. :-)
